Halifax is for food lovers.

We here at Passable are big fans of supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs. So we would admit to having a passable interest in I Love Local HFX, an initiative to get Haligonians to shop at local stores and try local goods. Of course, we are a bit more partial to the food end of the spectrum, so here are some of the events we think you should check out:

  • Bishop’s Cellar is having a wine tasting with winemaker Jean Benoit from Benjamin Bridge from 11-2 this Saturday.
  • Getaway Butchers are doing a butchery demonstration Saturday afternoon at 3pm at their Seaport Market storefront.
  • Various restaurants, including Saege, Chives, Da Maurizio and Stories are doing Kitchen Door Takeouts, inexpensive take out boxes of their wares.

Also on the local food front, Slow Food Nova Scotia is putting on their annual Spring Supper.

The dinner is already sold out (Boo – Hungry ed.) but for those lucky enough to have grabbed those select seats, it promises to be quite the feast. “It will be a fun evening with a lot of great food,” says participant and chef Renee Lavalee. “It will be a fun convivial evening where people get to try local stuff and suppliers they might know about. These events aren’t about the chefs, it’s about the farmers and producers that we want to showcase.”
