    Big Day Downtown: People's Choice

Another summer, another Big Day Downtown. Every Summer the Downtown Halifax Business Commission bribes a bunch of bloggers to write nice things about the downtown core with $150 credit card. For one beautiful afternoon we get to happily turn a blind eye to the crumbling facades of empty buildings that Starfish Properties continues to collect in their seemingly endless endeavour to create an empty husk of a city and, at least in Passable’s case, focus on eating everything in our path.

    Big Day (Night) Downtown

    IMG_7319

For the past few years, Passable has been participating in the Downtown Halifax Business Commission’s Big Day Downtown. Every summer, the DHBC gives a bunch of bloggers a pre-paid credit card to go explore the best of what downtown Halifax has to offer. Whether it’s sandwiches, spas, tattoos or trinkets, people get to go nuts in what is essentially a Treat Yo’ Self extravaganza. In the past, we’ve wandered one end of the waterfront to the other, had a wonderful meal prepared by Chef Craig Flinn in a “try something new” black box challenge, and paired up with another blogger to share experiences. This year it was all about fulfilling a brief made up of three words in whatever way you felt you could best define those words through downtown exploits.

My words were: relaxing, thrilling, and satisfying.

Relaxing was easy. I just didn’t bother doing anything related to this task, instead spending my evenings laying on my couch watching True Blood on Netflix. I live downtown, so it totally, totally, totally counts, you guys.

But what to do to fill the other two thirds of my brief? That was, surprisingly, even easier.

    A Big Day

For the third year in a row, Passable was invited to participate in the Big Day Downtown, a marketing and promotion strategy put on by the Downtown Halifax Business Commission.  They invite various bloggers in the HRM to visit and shop in the downtown core, armed with $100 gift cards to use as they see fit, and then write about their experience.

This year, the DHBC decided to send the writers out in teams picked at random. I was paired with Nicole Trask from Halifax Magazine’s Blog. Nicole and I decided to take each other to some of our favourite haunts and introduce each other to shopping experiences they the other may not know about.

We decided to meet up at that morning at the Seaport Market at eleven. Now, this would be a rare experience for me, since I am usually out of the market before the clock strikes eight, as I like to get there early.  And Nicole does shop at the market, so it wouldn’t be a completely new experience, but she wanted to see where I shopped. We were in the market for something meaty, and so we headed to Getaway Farm Butcher Shop.

I was worried that the shop may have already sold out of what I wanted, so I made the decision to call the Chris deWaal, the owner, the night before. I’ve interviewed Chris before, so I wanted to introduce him to Nicole. You see, as we were standing in line, Nicole told me that she doesn’t eat meat very often, mostly for ethical reasons vis-a-vis its production.  She doesn’t completely eschew it, but she is wary of buying it. I knew that if she talked to Chris, he may assuage any of her concerns.  We walked out of there with a couple of sausages for her, as well as a flank and hanger steak for me.

Big Day Downtown – Try Something New

    Big Day Downtown

“Try Something New.” That was the vague challenge of this year’s Big Day Downtown, a marketing strategy by the Downtown Halifax Business Commission that sees bloggers and media types wandering the downtown core with a $100 credit card, checking out businesses that interest them and then—clearly—writing about it.

Last year there was no theme. Kristina and I just wandered from coffee shop to market to brewery to restaurant, exploring food and drink found on the peninsula. This year, there’s this pesky twist. “Try something new” is a simple conceit, but I didn’t want to try some random, new restaurant or store just for the sake of fulfilling a brief. I wanted to really embrace the theme. I wanted to have a bit of an adventure.

So I decided to email someone new. I fired off a missive to Chef Craig Flinn, the chef/owner of Chives, one of the best restaurants not only in downtown Halifax, but in Halifax, period. There! New thing: done. Mission accomplished! Checklist completed! Blog. Save. Post. Exit. Thanks for the money, Downtown Business Commission. See you next year!

But wait! Craig emailed me back! So I guess there’s more to this whole thing.

Didn’t you use that to tip Chef Flynn?
(Did he do all this for free?!)

      Amazing meal.

What a wonderful idea and beautifully written post! Great job! I’ve only been to Chives once, but it was an experience I won’t soon forget – definitely a favourite!

    Big Day Downtown

    Big Day Downtown

As a part of the Downtown Halifax Business Commission’s “Big Day Downtown” marketing strategy, we were given a $100 gift card to run around downtown Halifax and explore the offerings of various local businesses. So on a sunny Saturday morning, Kristina and I decided to meet down in the Granville Mall and see where the day would take us. (More …)
